What etiquette should be observed in foreign funerals?
Non-religious funerals are often held in a cemetery hall or at a graveside. The funeral should always be solemn. People pray in deep meditation and pay their respects to the deceased. In the West, people do not usually cry at funerals. To attend a funeral, do not wear brightly colored clothing, but wear dark or other colorful clothes. Men should wear a black tie without flowers and a black veil on the left arm (or not). Women's accessories should be simple. Each person may wear one white flower on his or her chest. Funeral flowers may be sent through the funeral director or florist prior to the funeral. If the obituary states "no flowers," this should be followed and flowers need not be sent. Flowers should be accompanied by a ribbon with a message of condolence or the words "For XXX" and the name of the giver. It is customary for foreigners not to use paper flowers. Some people also write couplets, poems or articles in memory of the deceased. Very close relatives and friends can visit the home to offer their condolences and help the family with the funeral. However, if the deceased's loved ones are in mourning and do not want to see their friends and relatives, they should think of him or her and not go to the door to offer condolences.
